In order to convince people that your cause is worth donating to, you must clearly explain why it is worth supporting. You can tell your story effectively by following these simple steps:

  • Start with a hook or a bold claim
  •  Explain the need or problem in detail
  •  Describe your solution to the problem
  •  Add Urgency and value
  • Have a "call to action"

Sample story:
There are less than 7,000 Sumatran orangutans left in the wild today. The number one cause for their dwindling population is that their rainforest habitat is being burned at a rapid rate to plant palm oil plantations. Palm oil is an ingredient used in everything from candy to cosmetics to baked goods. In fact, it’s in about 50% of the products in your grocery store! In order to curb deforestation for palm oil production, consumers need to tell companies that they only want products with deforestation-free and socially-responsible sources of palm oil. It is up to each of us to embrace our power as consumers. But pushing companies to adopt sustainable policies is not enough. We need to help on the ground because orangutans are running out of time. They are expected to become extinct within the next 10 years if we don’t act now.  After deforesting habitat, orangutan mothers are captured and brutally killed. Their babies are often sold or kept as illegal pets. Organizations like Orangutan Outreach are rescuing these babies and rehabilitating them so that they can be returned to the wild where they belong. But the rescues, medical treatment and rehabilitation time (between 6-7 years per individual) is very expensive. By adopting an orangutan today, you will give this precious animal the help and resources it needs to return to the forest. You will truly play a role in saving this magnificent animal’s life. Donate today and you will receive monthly updates on your orangutan baby to monitor his or her progress and a custom “Save the Orangutan” wristband to wear in support. We are causing this destruction and it is our responsibility to alleviate it. But as Dr. Seuss puts it “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”

Once you have crafted your message, share your story with as many audiences as possible! Either in person, (speaking with people) or through writing (post on social media, design pamphlets, write on your website or blog).
